Southern Style Green Beans

For a delicious Southern meal, side dishes are rich in flavor and usually that means added fat. These slow cooked green beans are no exception. These beans feature what you’d expect from Southern style green beans, but with a twist. Whole garlic cloves give it an added depth of flavor, and the addition of chicken broth takes it up a notch. Make sure that you use fresh green beans for this dish. Canned will turn to mush in the cooker. Frozen will work in a pinch if they are defrosted, but for the best green beans you’ve ever had, use fresh. Serve these tender beans with fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy for a real Southern feast.

6 slices bacon, chopped
2 pounds fresh green beans, ends trimmed, cut into 1 inch pieces
1 medium onion, chopped
1 cup chicken broth
4 cloves garlic, smashed
6 whole black peppercorns
Add all of the ingredients to your slow cooker pot. Cover and cook on low heat for 6 hours until the beans are tender.
At some point during the cooking process, you can fry up some extra bacon and crumble it for a garnish if you’d like.
Before serving, remove the peppercorns and garlic from the pot.
